On Thursday evening I was one of the privileged members of NSSRC (North Sound Student Reading Council) to get to spend two hours hearing Sara Pennypacker speak about her books, writing, and how to write a children's book.
As some background for those people who are unaware of who this woman is, Sara Pennypacker is a children's author (though she recently published an adult novel) who has written several wonderful books for kids including, the Clementine series, Pierre in Love, Stuart Goes to School, Stuart's Cape, and has also recently taken over the writing of the Flat Stanley Series.
I recently was introduced to her children's series Clementine, a third grade student who doesn't care about anything, though she sometimes should. These books follow Clementine with her troubles and celebrations from the point of view of the little girl with a lot of attitude. They are books that really make you think differently about the students in your class who you may think are distracted and just asking to do the wrong thing day after day. They are books that any child can read and say, "Me too!" (which is the author's goal!).
She was a fantastic speaker really opening up to the attendees about her writing process and how she develops both plot and character for her novels. They are all charming stories that I cannot wait to share with my students and get their reaction! I would highly recommend them to any elementary student!
